This customer wanted his 2015 American Standard bass to be re born as a 57 Surf Green Jazz Bass. So I stripped the entire instrument down to the wood. and started there. Added a acid etched control plate and a Bad Ass III bridge. The tuners are Gotoh as per his request. The neck was refinished in my dirty tobacco stain and oiled. The decals are actual gold leaf and are in bedded under the hand oiled finish. Pickguard is also reliced and a set of Tom Brantley pickups added for good measure. It turned out to be a show stopper for sure. Many comments on the color and paint job.
Know far and wide as the most used instrument lacquer, Nitrocellulose offers the best tone characteristics and has the ability to be aged. It is very hard to get and even harder to get color matching. Rsm offers full custom nitro colors so choose your rainbow.
The gold leaf logo was selected by the customer. It is underneath 20 coats of hand oiled finish. The proprietary dirty tobacco stain really sets it off.
The Gotoh tuners are tarnished not acid etched. This is a totally different process still using acid but as a vapor. The Rsm logo is also underneath the hand oiled finish
The only way to do this right is to strip it down to the bare wood.
Really nice grain in this body.
The surface has to be absolutely perfect to shoot nitro. The nitor will show any flaw at all.
Looks very uniform but takes many light coats to get here.
Copper shielding is always the way to go. No compromises. We are building a instrument that has to play as good as it looks and sound even better.
Nothing like hanging your guitar neck from the shower stall. Logo is installed and oil is being applied coat by coat until perfection.
Always sign your work.
This is one of the projects that you spend hours just admiring. It turned out better than I thought I could ever do it and the customer was blown away. Win Win.
Even the back of it keeps your attention. Dirty tobacco neck really stands out. Plays great and sounds killer.
If you looked at this in person you would not be able to tell what the bass started out as. It clearly went through a major conversion from this to that. Every little detail was taken care of and it shows. Very proud of the way this turned out. My customer was so blown away he wanted to do another one in Fiesta Red. Why not.
