This instrument was brought to me to be restored.
It is a family heirloom and the gentleman's grandmother owned it.
It lived in a closet for years...
The neck joint had let go and the overhanging finger board was broken.
The body was warped out of condition and also needed to be straightened.
This is one of the nicest instruments I have ever restored.
It is also one of the best sounding.
Incredible.
Yup... Took the entire neck off to reset it. Thanks to my cappuccino machine for the steam and the wonders of hide glue.
This required the fret board being planed flat and then the radius applied.
What a mess. Someone else was already in here and wrecked most of it. This is supposed to be a dovetail joint. All must be re constructed.
New aged tuners and bone nut with finish restored.
This joint turned out perfectly.
I fitted the dovetail neck joint so tight I had to use a hammer to break it free before I glued it with hot hide glue.
Frets are cut precisely to match the previous fret size and location so they do not interfere with the binding.
Finish is restored. Rosewood bridge is slotted and intonatted.
A old glove that plays like butter
Not a single flat surface to be found. Steamed and re formed thanks to my cappuccino machine.
I always sweat when cutting a new bone nut.
One swipe too many and it's a do over.
Very seldom does something this cool come my way.
So I thought I would share it with everyone.
The pictures are in the order that I took them.
So you can see everything progress.
Enjoy.
